Seasoning a pizza stone is a crucial step to extend its longevity and secure optimal baking outcomes. Below is a step-by-step instruction on how to correctly season a pizza stone:

6 Steps to Season a Pizza Stone

Step 1 – Preparation

To properly season your pizza stone, begin by removing the stone from its packaging and wiping it down with a slightly damp cloth to remove any potential dust or dirt. Avoid using soap or cleaning agents, as they can seep into the stone. Thoroughly dry the pizza stone.

Step 2 – Place in the oven or grill

Place the pizza stone on the middle rack of your oven or grill, making sure it is even and not wobbling. Close the oven door or grill lid.

Step 3 – Slow heating

Preheat the oven to a low temperature of about 150°C (about 300°F). This helps to heat the stone slowly and avoid stress cracks. Let the pizza stone heat up at this temperature for about 30 minutes.

Step 4 – Increase temperature

Gradually increase the temperature of the oven by about 50°C (122°F) every 10-15 minutes until you reach the maximum temperature of your oven, usually about 250-280°C (482-536°F). Keep the pizza stone in the oven at the maximum temperature for about an hour. This helps to remove any residual moisture from the stone and prepare it for future baking.

Step 5 – Allow to cool

Turn off the oven and let the pizza stone cool completely in the oven. Do not open the oven door until the stone has cooled completely to avoid sudden temperature fluctuations that could damage the stone.

Step 6 – Care instructions for your pizza stone after the seasoning process

After baking, do not wet clean the pizza stone. Instead, use a dry brush or cloth to remove debris. Allow the pizza stone to cool completely after each use before cleaning or storing it.
