Ex-ski racer and freeride pro Matthias “Hauni” Haunholder shares insightful tips and tricks on grinding edges on a children’s ski in this video. The edge tuning of a children’s ski is basically very similar to a ski for adults such as a racing ski, touring ski or freeride ski.

Essentially, Matthias recommends an edge angle of 88 degrees for children’s skis, since children do not yet require overly sharp edges, which could potentially overwhelm them.

When should the edges of a child’s ski be sharpened?

Ski edges for children’s skis should be sharpened before the ski season to ensure they function properly and offer the child safety and edge grip

If the edges of the skis have been damaged by stones or hard floors and are no longer gripping or sliding properly, it is time to grind them. If you are on icy slopes and need more control, or the slope conditions change, you should think about optimizing the edges.

Here’s a summary:

  • Before the ski season starts to ensure that the edges are in good condition and free of rust.
  • If the ski edges are worn or dull and the skis lose grip.
  • After intensive skiing or after several days on the slopes, to restore the edges.
  • When driving on icy slopes and better control is required.
  • After riding over rocks or hard objects, to repair any resulting damage.
  • If changes in the ski’s handling have been detected in the corners or during braking.
  • If you want to change the edge angle to adapt it to different snow conditions.
  • Before an important race or competition, to ensure the ski edges provide optimal control.

Tip for children’s skis: Please deburr well, there should be no injuries due to too sharp edges or a ski that has been ground too aggressively. Use edge rubber to break the edges as recommended in the video, in the area of the shovel and at the end of the ski!

Grinding ski edges – an edge tuning guide in 7 steps

Whether you are a professional racer or an avid recreational winter sports enthusiast, sharp ski edges are critical to a fun, safe and successful on-piste experience. We’ll explain how it works!

The Edge Tuning Set for Children’s Skis from Tyrolit Life in Detail

The Tyrolit Life Edge Tuning Kit offers an ideal suite of tools for ensuring sharp edges. It comprises two stainless steel, three ceramic, and two flexible files, which, when used together with the provided stainless steel angle, guarantee optimal outcomes. Tyrolit Life presents three distinct grinding angles: 86 degrees, 87 degrees, and 88 degrees. For children’s skis, experts suggest a firm edge angle of 88 degrees.

The ceramic combination file, which can be used without an angle, is ideal for on-the-go, as well as the hand-held edge rubber, which is excellent for removing rust, deburring, and cleaning.

Various files are available for precise edge preparation. The stainless steel files are used for preparing ski and snowboard edges. They enable efficient material removal and precise adjustment of the edge angle. The “coarse” stainless steel file, with its coarse teeth, is ideal for heavily damaged edges, while the “fine” 2nd-cut file is designed for smoothing worn edges.

Fine tuning is achieved using the three Tyrolit Life ceramic files. These files deburr, smooth, and sharpen the edges in a gradual process. With the grit sizes of “coarse”, “medium”, and “fine”, you can customize the sharpening to suit the snow conditions and ensure high surface quality. The coarse and fine elastic files are designed for polishing and perfecting the edges, providing an excellent alternative to traditional diamond files. Their elasticity ensures a uniform contact area across all ski radii.

The stainless steel angle included in the set allows precise application of the files and offers different edge angle options from 86 to 88 degrees, depending on the selected set. All parts of the set can also be purchased individually. The Tyrolit Life edge tuning set, made in Tyrol, ensures a perfect grip thanks to an exact edge preparation.
