How long should you preheat a pizza stone?
The pizza stone is usually heated for between 30 and 45 minutes – depending on the manufacturer’s instructions. However, when heating it up, there are a few additional things to consider to ensure you can bake a crispy pizza just like from an Italian pizzeria in your own oven.
What you need to consider when preheating in the oven, as well as on the grill grate, is explained here step by step.
Preheat pizza stone in the oven
Whether it’s fireclay or cordierite: On a hot pizza stone, you can quickly bake authentic Italian pizza, as well as tarte flambée, bread, and even desserts without any issue. However, before you can grab the pizza peel and load the pizza dough, you need to preheat the pizza stone to the appropriate temperature.
To do this, place the stone on the grate on the lowest rail, in the still cold oven, to avoid sudden temperature differences. Then set the oven to the temperature recommended by the pizza stone manufacturer – often simply the highest level at the oven. Although the maximum temperature that can be reached at the highest level varies from oven to oven, 230 °C top/bottom heat is usually not a problem.
Pizza stones are usually heated in the oven for between 30 and 45 minutes. At Tyrolit Life, for example, we recommend at least 30 minutes at 230°C for our pizza stones to heat them up. This relatively short heating time is made possible by the special waffle structure on the bottom of the pizza stone, thanks to which it absorbs heat particularly efficiently.
Preheat the pizza stone on the grill
Homemade pizza from the grill? This is also not a problem with the pizza stone, and so in addition to the barbecue tongs, a pizza stone (e.g. a cordierite pizza stone, but also one made of fireclay, soapstone or another natural stone) including a pizza peeler is also one of the daily helpers at the BBQ.
To transform your grill into a pizza oven, place the pizza stone on the grill while it’s still cold and preheat it to avoid sudden temperature changes. Ensure there is at least 2 cm of space between the pizza stone and the grill’s edge to prevent heat buildup. For effective heat retention, your gas grill, electric dome grill, or charcoal grill must also be equipped with a lid to allow heat to circulate properly.
In order to find out more about the heating time and temperatures, it is worth taking another look at the manufacturer’s instructions. As a rule, time periods between 30 and 45 minutes are specified here. In terms of temperatures, Tyrolit Life recommends about 300°C for its pizza stone (many grills have a built-in thermometer; otherwise, you can use an infrared thermometer for clarity).
To make the most efficient use of the limited space on the grill, Tyrolit Life has developed the FLEX stone. It can be used whole or split into three separate pieces, allowing for the preparation of crispy side dishes alongside the fillet on the grate.
Note with the pizza stone on the grill that at such high temperatures the baking time of the perfect pizza Margherita is significantly shorter than with the pizza stone in the oven or even on the baking tray – similar to the authentic stone oven. The pizza is ready in a few minutes on the hot stone, with a crispy pizza base even with several pizzas in a row.
Pizza stone on the gas grill – a pizza from the grill?
Do you want to bake the perfect pizza on your gas grill? Then you need the Tyrolit pizza stone. In this article, we’ll show you what to look for when selecting a pizza stone and how to use your grill as a pizza oven. Additionally, you’ll learn all the steps to bake a perfect pizza and get the pizza stone ready for its next use.
And how to cool down the pizza stone?
You’ve noticed – the pizza stone doesn’t like sudden temperature changes. This applies not only when preheating the pizza stone, but also when cooling it down. Therefore, keep the pizza stone in the still heating oven or on the hot grill and let both cool down together. This not only prevents you from burning yourself with the hot stone, but also prevents your pizza stone from cracking.
Once it has completely cooled down, you can clean the pizza stone. Usually, it suffices to wipe away flour and other remnants from baking with a cloth or brush. More stubborn stains can be gently removed with a ceramic hob scraper – however, always heed the manufacturer’s instructions.
Essentially, you should avoid making the pizza stone really wet – it could absorb water and break. Seasoning the pizza stone – utilize these tips before its first use.
Heating Duration – What It Depends On
So let’s summarize: Depending on the manufacturer’s specification, pizza stones are preheated for between 30 and 45 minutes. Temperatures range from 230°C (in the oven) to 300°C (on the grill).
How long a pizza stone has to heat up depends, among other things, on the material used and the thickness of the stone: a 1.5 cm thick pizza stone usually takes less time than a 5 cm thick stone to get to temperature.
Another factor that can influence the heating time is special surface structures on the bottom of a pizza stone. Tyrolit Life, for example, has provided its cordierite pizza stone with a waffle structure to make heating more efficient and to make the pizza stone ready for use faster.
