Edge tuning – 5 advantages of snowboard and ski service
At first glance, edging tuning may seem like a detail that is only needed by professional athletes in the World Cup. But reality shows that precise edge guidance is crucial far beyond the professional scene.
For snowboarders and skiers of all levels, carefully performed edge tuning can take the riding experience to a new level. But why is edge tuning so important?
Enhanced maneuverability and control: Sharp edges enable better control in turns and maneuvers. The ability to steer precisely and manage speed is significantly influenced by the edge quality.
Increased safety: Sharp edges provide more grip on the slope, especially on icy or steep sections. A safe footing and the ability to react in a timely manner can prevent accidents.
Optimal Power Transfer: Well-prepared edges ensure efficient power transfer from the snowboard or ski to the snow. This enhances performance and reduces the effort required while skiing or snowboarding.
Minimization of Wear: Sharp edges decrease frictional resistance and reduce material wear on the surfaces. This contributes to a longer lifespan of the equipment.
Personal Customization: Edge tuning allows athletes to adjust their equipment according to their personal preferences. Depending on their style and the conditions, edges can be optimized to meet their specific needs.
To fully leverage these benefits, occasional sharpening alone is not enough. A comprehensive snowboard and ski service, including edge tuning, ensures consistent quality and performance of your equipment.
Sharp edges for skis and snowboards with Tyrolit Life
When it comes to edge tuning for snowboards and skis, Tyrolit Life is a name that stands for precision and quality. Whether you’re a hobby winter sports enthusiast or a professional racer, sharp edges that ensure optimal grip even on icy surfaces are key to fun, safety, and success on the slopes.
With the new sidewall planer and a premium 10-piece edge tuning set from Tyrolit Life, you can individually and effectively tune your ski and snowboard edges. The sets, comprising steel files, ceramic files, elastic files, stainless steel angles, and other tools, were developed to meet the demands of winter sports athletes at the highest level. All tools are also available individually.
To access the edge with your tools, it’s necessary to regularly trim the sidewalls. This involves cutting a wafer-thin strip from the ski or snowboard’s lateral plastic to expose just enough of the edge for grinding at the perfect angle.
Precision is key here, something that can be easily achieved with a sidewall stripper from Tyrolit Life. The depth, position, and angle of the cut can be adjusted individually, allowing you to efficiently prepare the edges for the next step with just a few maneuvers.
Preparing the edges – half the battle
The preparation of the edges is the first step towards sharp edges. This step is often overlooked, yet tasks such as cleaning and deburring are of critical importance for the efficiency of the entire process.
Preparing the edges with Tyrolit Life tools involves:
– Edge rubber – Sanding rubber softly prepares and cleans the edges
– Steel files – available in coarse and fine grit for the initial sharpening
– Stainless steel angle – ensures precise alignment of the edge angles during grinding
Shape Edges
After the edges have been prepared, the next step in edge tuning is shaping the edges. This step is aimed at forming the edges into the desired shape to achieve optimal performance, maneuverability, and control on the slopes. Properly shaping the edges is crucial to maximizing the potential of your snowboard or ski and enhancing your riding experience.
The high-quality tools from Tyrolit Life also play a vital role in the shaping process:
– Ceramic file – ensures the material is removed evenly.
– Stainless steel angle – guarantees the edges are sharpened at the correct angle.
The finishing touch for sharp edges
After the edges have been shaped, we are approaching the final step of the edge tuning – the finishing touch. This step aims to perfect the edges and give them the fineness that is essential for ultimate performance and precision on the slopes. The final touch gives your ski or snowboard edges the decisive advantage to perform optimally in all conditions.
Tyrolit Life’s high-quality tools also play a crucial role in the finishing touches:
Elastic files: The elastic files are used to smooth the edges gently, to polish and to remove fine unevenness – as an alternative to the conventional diamond file. They give the edges a smooth surface and help to achieve the desired sharpness.
Steel Angle: The steel angle comes back into play to precisely adjust the edge angles to the point. A precise edge angle is crucial to achieve the desired cutting performance and control.
Edge rubber: The edge rubber is also used again to reduce the sharpness of the edges if necessary
Edge Tuning Products from Austria – Do Your Own Ski Service
Edge tuning with Tyrolit Life’s high-quality tools is a crucial step in maximizing the performance of your winter sports equipment. Whether you’re competing in professional races or are new to the winter sports scene, having sharp edges is essential for performance and safety on the slopes.
Tyrolit Life offers a wide array of products, enabling you to individually customize and optimize your ski and snowboard edges. Whether you’re in need of specific tools or already possess a basic set, Tyrolit Life provides individual tools for enhancing your edges.
The side wall remover from Tyrolit Life perfectly complements the Tyrolean grinding expert’s range of edge tuning products. It enables easy removal of the side walls, exposing the embedded edges for further processing.
The cutting depth, angle, and proximity to the edge can be adjusted with ease. This enables you to make wafer-thin cuts in the side walls, allowing you to unleash your grinding skills thereafter.
For comprehensive and complete edge optimization, Tyrolit Life offers the edge tuning set All in One. This set contains all the necessary tools to optimize your ski and snowboard edges from preparation to finishing touches.
The set includes steel files, ceramic files, elastic files, a stainless steel angle (optionally with 86, 87 or 88 degree angles), a combination file and an edge rubber. With this set, you have everything you need to get your edges in top shape and shine on the slopes.
To sharpen the edges of skis, the sidewalls sometimes need to be trimmed to expose the edge material. Next, both the bottom edge and the side edge should be cleaned and deburred.
This is followed by several rounds of grinding – from rough to formative, and finally, to a fine finish. The edges are always sharpened at a specific angle, which influences the skiing attributes of the skis (using either an electric edge sharpener or manually with the help of steel angles).
Typically, this angle ranges between 86 and 88 degrees. To further optimize the skiing characteristics, the edges should be cleaned of any wax residue after applying ski wax.
Why should snowboard edges be sharpened?
Snowboard edges should be sanded regularly to ensure safe handling and optimal performance. In addition, regular edge tuning extends the lifespan of the snowboard.
What is a sidewall puller used for?
To expose the edges of skis or snowboards (this is referred to as releasing the edges), a sidewall puller is used. It removes the plastic from the sidewalls and comes into play either with new purchases or when the edges have been worked on so frequently that they cannot be reached with a file anymore.
How do I best clean the ceramic and elastic files?
In order to free the pores from metal residues of the edge and to release the abrasive grain again, we recommend cleaning from time to time with water, soap and an abrasive paper (grit 400).
What is the difference between ceramic and elastic files?
The difference between the files lies in their bonding. While the elastic files feature a synthetic resin bond and are flexible (conforming to shape), the ceramic files are bound with ceramic and are rigid. Typically, the elastic files are used after the ceramic files.
